Understanding and truly knowing a character require intensive study of every facet of the brand heroine’s life. What she wears is the tip of the iceberg and the brand pyramid. When getting to know and truly understand a character, I dive into every aspect of her life. In addition to her wardrobe, there is the rest of her life to analyze: the physical, emotional, intellectual, and the spiritual selves. The physical realm encompasses her wardrobe, her belongings, and the places she goes, including her home.
Today, let’s take a look at JP’s home and see what more this tells us about “her”. Upon looking at the James Perse Furniture Collection, we see there are 4 series available from which to choose: Malibu, Nor Cal, Los Angeles, and Brentwood.
At first glance, they seem to sit well together. No pun intended! However, it’s important to note some differences.
We can see that JP’s style based upon her clothing is relaxed, easy, and comfortable. We see the fabrics she seemingly prefers must feel good against her skin. Hence washed fabrics come to mind. Natural fibers such as cottons and linens are her primary choices. Based upon these observations, we know that her home will and must support these preferences.
Let’s begin by selecting where she enjoys sitting. What kind of sofa would she choose? Does she want it to be stiff and hard? Or does she want to sink into it when she sits? Does she want to spend time there? Does she work while sitting there? Does she read? How does she spend her time while sitting there? Is it important to her to spend time on the couch? Or does she prefer another place in her home to sit? Does she eat while sitting on her couch? Or does she prefer to sit at a dining table? Does she watch film or TV while sitting on the couch? Does she even own a TV? The answers to these types of questions help us understand the mindset and core essence while creating a character or analyzing an existing brand for consistency.
Hence, would JP prefer spending her time sitting on this piece, the “Montecito Daybed” ?
Or sitting on this, the “Craftsman Sofa”?
How about this as a possibility, the “Sonoma Sofa”?
Or this, the “Sonoma Chaise”?
Let’s take a look at “her” again.
I see her spending time on the Sonoma series. Do you agree?
“A collection of upholstered pieces that capture the refined and relaxed quality of the James Perse aesthetic: modern and timeless. Fabrics are offered in 100% Belgium and Italian basket weave linens as well as a cotton linen blend, and express a lived in and laundered look. ”
These pieces are in alignment with JP. What does this mean for the Montecito Daybed and the Craftsman Sofa?
More to come…….
